Alice Springs Inland Dragway Forging Ahead
The Central Australian Drag Racing Association is making great progress with the new Alice Springs Inland Dragway. Earthworks are well underway and the club has completed major works on the race control building.
“We plan to have the track ready for testing later this year.” said CADRA Vice President Ray Baney. “The project was made possible by a generous grant from the Northern Territory Government. Additional work on things like water runoff, retention dams, and oil and water separators have delayed progress and hit our budgets a bit, but the good news is that all of the obstacles have been cleared and we’ll end up with possibly the most environmentally friendly drag strip on the planet.”
Baney said the official race programme should get underway around March 2008. “We do not have funding for night lighting at this stage and running in daylight during the height of summer is not totally ideal. CADRA ran drag racing successfully on a disused runway at the Alice Springs Airport for thirteen years until the original WW2 surface became worn and unstable.
Australian National Drag Racing Association CEO Tony Thornton said CADRA had been working closely with ANDRA for many years and they had achieved an outstanding result with the new venue. “With Alice Springs Inland Dragway and the Hidden Valley complex in Darwin, the Northern Territory will have access to two permanent quarter mile tracks. This reflects the commitment of the clubs concerned, the strength of ANDRA Drag Racing nationally, as well as the foresight of the Northern Territory Government.”
