Aussie Drag Racer Graeme Cooper Wins Class At N H R A U S Nationals
Australian drag racing champion Graeme Cooper has been awarded a class victory at the world’s biggest and most prestigious drag racing event, the 53rd annual NHRA Mac Tools US Nationals.
Cooper finished runner-up in O/Stock Auto class yesterday, but a post-race inspection of opponent Charlie Downing’s vehicle revealed technical irregularities, officials notifying Cooper of his win this afternoon.
Cooper, from Hastings near Melbourne, drove a 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle V8 station wagon leased from Canadian racer Norm La Pointe.
The victory comes 13 years after Cooper also reached the Stock class finals during his only other US Nationals appearance in 1994.
“We had hoped to go one better than what we did back in 1994 but I wasn’t disappointed with yesterday’s result,” Cooper said.
“Just racing at the US Nationals is ever Aussie drag racer’s dream, so to now be told that we’ve won is incredible.”
Considered one of Australia’s best ever amateur drag racers, Cooper has three Australian Super Sedan Championships and over 30 national event victories to his credit, all won with his famous V8 ‘Bricklayer’ EH Holden station wagon.
He is now one of 128 racers to have qualified for Stock final eliminations, beginning tomorrow.
The 53rd annual Mac Tools US Nationals concludes Monday (US time).
