Castrol Edge Winternationals A Record Breaker

The 40th Castrol EDGE Winternationals at Queensland’s Willowbank Raceway from June 8-10 will boast the largest ever contingent of Group One vehicles in the history of Australian drag racing.

Eighty-five professional entries have been received among more than 580, two and four-wheeled machines, which reaffirms the event as the biggest quarter mile showdown outside North America.

A record breaking, first ever, full field of eight dragsters will contest the Redcliffe Dyno and Tune Top Fuel bracket.

As the headline act, nothing compares to the sights and sounds produced by these nitro guzzling beasts of the drag strip and with such a massive contingent of 8000-plus horsepower Top Fuelers at the Winternationals, organisers are counting on hosting plenty of new fans during the Queen’s birthday weekend celebration.

“This is a mind-blowing achievement for Willowbank Raceway and truly defines the growing popularity and interest in drag racing throughout Australia,” said Willowbank Raceway General Manager Steve Bettes.

“The Castrol EDGE Winternationals is our signature event and how timely that on the 40th occasion of this unique motorsports spectacular that we achieve such a major milestone.

“To have 85 entries competing in the professional brackets is amazing and all but guarantees some of the best drag racing money can buy during this year’s event.”

As a Queensland favourite, Jack Daniel’s Top Doorslammer is extremely well represented with a jam-packed contingent of 21 entries, while it’s a similar story in Motorsport Connections Top Alcohol with 14 drivers vying for outright honours.

Fans have come to expect big things in Travelaire Tours Pro Stock and this year’s 40th Castrol EDGE Winternationals has brought together 17 drivers to deliver close, fast paced racing action.

So far as the two-wheeled categories are concerned, the nitro-powered Morgan and Wacker Top Bike bracket will be fought out between 13 riders, while QT Pro Stock Motorcycle consists of a starting list of 12.

“In tune with the response from racers throughout the country, we’ve also been fielding enquiries from eager fans keen to get their hands on a Winternationals ticket.

“As always we have a selection of viewing options at the Castrol EDGE Winternationals to suit any individual and the open air viewing mound will again prove very popular with family groups.

“Pit admission is all inclusive and we hope everyone takes the opportunity to see what goes on behind the scenes as their favourite teams gear up to challenge for a coveted Winternationals gold Christmas tree winner’s trophy.

“Grandstand ticket sales are again tracking well and with confirmation of the completed starting list of competitors we expect the tempo to pick up before our event starts on Friday June 8.

“We’re less than two weeks away from a start and for competitors there’s just the official warm-up to take place this Sunday before it’s game-on.”

For sports fans World-wide the familiar crackle of Australia’s most high-powered drag racing machines can’t come soon enough as Willowbank Raceway again showcases the best of quarter mile drag racing duels.

This iconic, home-grown Queensland entertainment masterpiece continually serves up first class, magical moments particularly in the closely contested Group One professional categories.

The way season 2006/07 has transpired there’s little doubt among fans, officials or racers themselves that the 2007 Castrol EDGE Winternationals will provide another fine chapter in Australian drag racing.
