2016 Supercars Season of Endurance Grid

Post by robhealy86 » Thu May 19, 2016 6:47 pm

It seems really early in the year to be talking about this but the 2016 Season of Endurance grid is filling up fast with only three pairings yet to be confirmed. The first dedicated co-drivers practice session for the year will be held tomorrow at this weekend's Winton round.

Here is the line-up as confirmed so far:

Prodrive Racing Australia (Ford Falcon FGX)
#1 Mark Winterbottom / Dean Canto
#6 Cameron Waters / Jack Le Brocq
Rod Nash Racing (Ford Falcon FGX)
#55 Chaz Mostert / Steve Owen
Super Black Racing (Ford Falcon FGX)
#111 Chris Pither / Richie Stanaway

DJR Team Penske (Ford Falcon FGX)
#12 Fabian Coulthard / Luke Youlden
#17 Scott Pye / Tony DAlberto

Nissan Motorsport (Nissan Altima L33)
#7 Todd Kelly / Matt Campbell
#15 Rick Kelly / Russell Ingall
#23 Michael Caruso / Dean Fiore
#96 Dale Wood / David Russell

Volvo Polestar Racing GRM (Volvo S60)
#33 Scott McLaughlin / David Wall
#34 James Moffat / James Golding

Holden Racing Team (Holden Commodore VF)
#2 Garth Tander / Warren Luff
#22 James Courtney / Jack Perkins

Erebus Motorsport V8 (Holden Commodore VF)
#4 Aaron Russell / TBA (likely Drew Russell)
#9 David Reynolds / TBA (possible Alex Davison)

Triple Eight Race Engineering (Holden Commodore VF)

#222 Nick Petcat / Oliver Gavin

Brad Jones Racing (Holden Commodore VF)

Cars #3, #4 & #9 are the only drivers without confirmed pairings. GRM are unsure who will drive which car for the enduros but Wall will drive #33 for tomorrow's session & Golding will drive #34. At LDM, Oliver Gavin can only make Bathurst & Gold Coast so someone else will slot into #222 at Sandown.

To me it looks like the Red Bull/888/Caltex cars and then the "rest of the field". The latter has a serious uphill climb.

Thanks for the post, Rob!

Line-up updated to include Cameron McConville in car #222 at Sandown (Oliver Gavin will take over at Bathurst & Gold Coast). LDM have not yet announced a co-driver for Andre Heimgartner in the #3 but Alex Rullo is the most likely option. Also with Aaron Russell out at Erebus, a new main driver must be found to join Shae Davies who may end up taking over full-time instead with a new co-driver.

Is Lee Holdsworth expected to be ready by Sandown? 50/50?

Holdsworth will be ready by Sandown according to Charlie Schwerkolt, Mike. He is progressing well by all reports & has ditched the wheelchair for a walking frame. He will jump behind the wheel again on the ride day immediately after Sydney Motorsport Park (29th August) although he will still be on crutches at that point. Sandown is on the 16th-18th of September so if he can complete the ride day, I'd say he will be 100% right (or close to it) for Sandown albeit slightly down on race fitness.

Thanks, Rob. And, I also noted you have Baird pairing with Reynolds. It will be interesting to see who slips into the 4 Car. Do you think Aaren Russell might be back after Baird-o shakes it down?
...and now I'll go back to my side of the planet.

Nope. Big parting between Betty and the Russell's (and Plus Fitness). I doubt we will see Russell back in that car this year.
There's nothing quite like a Holden

As kenny has said, I would highly doubt Aaren Russell will be back at Erebus. As far as I know, the relationship between Erebus & the Russell family has OK but there was a major falling out between the owner of Fitness Plus & Betty over sponsorship activation at Townsville. Apparently they had agreed on certain promotional activities which never eventuated. Fitness Plus then terminated their contract & as Aaren Russell couldn't continue without said sponsor he also parted ways with Erebus. Erebus & the Russell family had already made an agreement that Erebus could continue to use the #4 car for the rest of the year if they were to part ways early.

With only 2 1/2 weeks left to the enduros I thought it was time for an update.

Oliver Gavin has now pulled out altogether (he was previously going to miss only Sandown) due to a tyre test for Corvette in the States now scheduled on the same weekend as the Gold Cost 600. Cameron McConville has stepped up to partner Percat in #222 for the full enduro campaign. The co-driver for #3 has yet to be announced but is likely to be Alex Rullo.

Shae Davies has stepped up to main-driver status for the rest of the year so a new co-driver has to be found for car #4. This is likely to be decided this week & is said to be a leading DVS driver (Garry Jacobson or Todd Hazelwood seem like possible candidates).

GRM have confirmed David Wall will partner Scott McLaughlin in #33 & James Golding will co-drive with James Moffat in #34.

Finally, Renee Gracie & Simona De Silvestro will return to the PRA Harvey Norman Supergirls as a wildcard entry at Bathurst.

Updated entry list:

Prodrive Racing Australia (Ford Falcon FGX)
#1 Mark Winterbottom / Dean Canto
#6 Cameron Waters / Jack Le Brocq

The big news on the Harvey Norman Supergirls Bathurst wildcard entry is that they will not be at PRA this year & they are shopping around for another team to run the car for them. At this stage, Nissan Motorsport is the mostly likely team to run the car ahead of a possible full-time drive for Simona De Silvestro at the team in 2017.

I must say it is sad to see the entry has had to move from PRA for whatever reason as the whole idea of a two year deal for the Supergirls was for them to learn the car/track in year 1 & return in year 2 knowing exactly what to expect. Now they must solve half the equation again by learning a new car. I'm eager to see how they perform the 2nd time round as apart from Renee's early shunt at Forests Elbow due to slipping on the oil from the Wall/Pither #34 GRM Volvo, they did a fairly solid job for rookies (especially Simona).

Prodrive Racing Australia (Ford Falcon FGX)

my understanding is PRA pulled it cause they have too many cars (6) running the event already.

That's how I read it too, camaroguy. PRA only ran the single DVS entry for Waters in 2015 alongside their 4 main-game cars. This year they are running two DVS cars for Le Brocq & Jacobson. It seems strange PRA went into the year with two DVS entries knowing they wouldn't be able to hold-up their end of the bargain come Bathurst. Obviously the two year Supergirls contract wasn't very binding.
